Fun, cute, colorful and functional. Handcrafts made by me, Maci, and sold to you on Etsy.
I have a tough time getting rid of old clothes. Whether the clothing item is tied to a memory, fit perfectly at some point in my life, or is made with really cool fabric, sometimes I just can't let it go. The really cool fabric part is my vice. I've been holding on to an old skirt that simply didn't fit correctly, but I loved the fabric. I had a feeling this ancient frock would take on an alternate purpose in the future that only time would reveal. The looming annual family beach vacay coupled with the need for a new beach tote and voila! Old skirt into beach tote.
It was quick, easy and fun to make. If you'd like to know the details of how I made my beach tote, ask! I like sharing.Stripes, polka dots, squares; I like simple shapes. Houndstooth will always be a favorite, but the chevron pattern is my newest intrigue. Following this tutorial I grabbed my yellow and white fabric and got to work. Precision is key. My stripes got a bit off track, but I know exactly what to do next time to ensure that doesn't happen again. And as usual, the little (non) helper couldn't resist tromping through my work space.
Event: 25th birthday celebration
Objective: Create party decorations using leftover, forgotten, remnant and/or tucked away forever fabric
Budget: $0.00
Rationale: We are a house of crafters with exceptionally large quantities of fabric that would have otherwise gone unused for an indefinite amount of time
Result: A well received crafty collaboration that sufficiently decorated our home and made us smile
Blast the holiday tunes and serve up the hot cocoa plus peppermint schnapps, because the first snow of Greensboro, North Carolina, is here! Hibernation mode engaged (although the mailman just stopped by; brave soul). What better way to spend this frosty, white afternoon than doing a little creating. Family and friends beware. Christmas gifts of the handmade kind are in progress!
In addition to friends gifting me with their goods for my birthday, we spent the day participating in the Carolina Lily Summers-End Craft Fair in Salisbury, NC. It turned out to be a day worth celebrating for many reasons. My friends and I set up shop, mingled with fellow crafties, enjoyed the gorgeous outdoors, and...actually sold stuff! I managed to sell a few wristlets, happily exceeding my expectations of profiting nothing. You never know what will happen your first time out and this personal victory added fuel to my creative fire. The ideas I generated are also worth mentioning; an invaluable bonus when participating in events like these. Craft fair vendor newbie no more! I can’t wait until the next one.
A special thanks to Emily (purplecricket.etsy.com) for coordinating our table space and her adorable pumpkin hat. And thanks to Nadia (surlybirdstudio.com) for providing the day's entertainment and making some pretty awesome sellables to draw in the crowd.
I love having creative friends. It's especially fantastic around birthday time when your creative friends make you creative things.
My super sweet friend/roommate/coworker made a trip to San Francisco a few months ago and was thoughtful enough to bring back a cut of gorgeous fabric. I've been hanging on to it since because the life of this one-of-a-kind piece needed to be well thought out (blame the sentiment in me). Today it struck me like a heat-seeking missile: curtains! So the decision was made and bathroom curtains were born on this sunny Sunday afternoon.
Lucky for me I have about an eighth of a yard leftover!
It’s known as the 365 project. The idea is to document your specialized "somethings" each day for one year. I've heard of photographers tackling this (i.e. 365project.org), and I’m sure it’s been done a variety of other ways. In the sewing world there's Marisa who's taken on this endeavor with most impressive results. On her blog, New Dress A Day, Marisa explains she was having a “creative-funk-crisis this year and needed a bit of inspiration.” While this undertaking has undoubtedly alleviated her own funk, Marisa’s energy, wit and talent has certainly inspired me over the past few months.
Check out yesterday's creation!
And be sure to check out her blog, New Dress A Day, every day!
Who knew a mini drawstring bag would be so tricky to make. Isn't that the way it usually goes with first attempts at a new project?!
Notes to self:A few of my favorites things, existing on the stove.
